Townsend served on the School Board of Randolph Union High School from 1986 to 1995. He has served as a Selectman for Randolph on the Vermont Selectboard since 1979.
Townsend served in the United State Army from 1968 to 1971. He is currently the co-manager of Onion Flats, Inc. Restaurant.
Townsend earned his AS in Electronics from Vermont Technical College in 1967.

Townsend won re-election in the 2012 election for Vermont House of Representatives Orange-Washington-Addison. Townsend was unopposed in the August 28 Democratic primary and was unopposed in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2]
2010
Larry Townsend ran for re-election to the Orange-Addison 1 District in 2010. He ran against Patsy French (D), James Sault (R), and Stewart Skrill (R) in the general election on November 2, 2010. Townsend won one of two available seats in the district.[3]
