The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States. Created to empower members and provide them opportunities, the LULAC has expanded greatly since its creation.[1] According to their website, "The Mission of the League of United Latin American Citizens is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States."[2] The LULAC has a network of 135,000 community volunteers, 880 local councils, 60 community technology centers and 15 LULAC National Educational Service Centers in which it uses to create opportunities for Hispanic Americans.The LULAC has representation in 34 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.[3]


The LULAC started in 1929, amid civil and human rights violations directed toward Hispanics. The LULAC in California successfully integrated schools in Orange County in 1945. In 1954, LULAC brought Hernandez vs. the State of Texas to court and won. Since then, the League has working to fight discrimination and xenophobia against Hispanics.[4]


The LULAC is governed by their board of directors which is composed of 25 members.[5] Their current president is Margaret Moran.[6]
