Stender earned her B.A. in Interdisciplinary Communications from American University. Prior to her election to the Assembly Stender served on the Union County Board of Freeholders from 1994-2002, Mayor of the Borough of Fanwood from 1992-1995, and was a member of the Borough of Fanwood Council from 1988-1990. [1]

2011
Stender won re-election in 2011. She and incumbent Gerald Green ran unopposed in the Democratic Primary on June 7. They then defeaated Joan Van Pelt and Jeffrey First in the November 8 general election.[3]
2009
Stender won re-election in the November 3, 2009 general election. She was bracketed with Gerald Green and defeated Republican challengers William Vastine and Martin Marks.[4][5]
