HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania: Hundreds of mourners gathered on January 3 to say goodbye to the late Michael O'Pake, the longest-serving member of the Pennsylvania Legislature.[1] O'Pake, known as "the people's senator," died on December 27 due to complications resulting from heart bypass surgery on November 22. He was 70.[2]
O'Pake was first elected to the General Assembly in 1968 and to the Senate in 1972. He had been re-elected since then, most recently in 2008, and was re-elected as Democratic whip for the 2011-2012 session. O'Pake represented the 11th Senatorial District from Bucks County.
