He works as an architect and in 1985 founded his own firm, JLG Architects. From 2004 to 2008, he was the State's Architect as well as chairman of the ND Historic Preservation Review Board. He has served on the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce and became the chairman in 1996.
Laffen has two degrees from North Dakota State University. He and his wife Pam live in Grand Forks and have three children.[1]
