Issues
Presidential preference
2012
Lou Barletta endorsed Rick Santorum in the 2012 presidential election. [4]
Specific votes
Fiscal Cliff
Barletta voted for the fiscal cliff compromise bill, which made permanent most of the Bush tax cuts originally passed in 2001 and 2003 while also raising tax rates on the highest income levels. He was one of 85 Republicans that voted in favor of the bill. The bill was passed in the House by a 257/167 vote on January 1, 2013.[5]
Elections
2014
Race background
On February 26, 2013, PoliticsPA and The Hill previewed a combined three Pennsylvania races which are already showing promise, either for primary competitiveness or because the district may be vulnerable to partisan switch. Of the eighteen total House seats up for election in 2014, Republicans currently hold thirteen.
In the 11th district, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is reportedly vetting former Rep. Chris Carney as a potential challenger to GOP incumbent Lou Barletta. Although Pennsylvania's 11th is "darker red than the party's 2012 congressional targets," Carney's background makes him an appealing candidate. He unseated a Republican in the 2006 election, and was re-elected by 10th district voters in 2008. After voting for the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as "Obamacare," Carney's popularity dropped enough to clear a wide path for Republican challenger Tom Marino to win the seat from him in 2010. Since the districts were redrawn in 2010, most of Carney's 10th district base, and 24% of all 10th district voters, are now part of the 11th district owned by Barletta. The Democratic party leaders' interest in Carney suggests they are optimistic that many of his former constituents will have forgiven his support for Obamacare by the time they hit the polls in 2014.[6]
2012
Barletta ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Pennsylvania's 11th District. He was unopposed in the April 24, 2012 Republican Primary and faced Gene Stilp (D) in the November 6, 2012 general election.[7]
The Washington Post listed the House of Representatives elections in Pennsylvania in 2012 as one of the states that could determine whether Democrats would retake the House or Republicans would hold their majority in 2013.[8] Ohio tied with Pennsylvania for 9th on the list.[8] Barletta was considered one the vulnerable incumbents.[9]
