Hazel announced in April 2014 that he was not a candidate for the Louisiana's 5th Congressional District.[1]

“My name was mentioned in a poll as a candidate in the congressional race. I never said that. I want the record straight. I want people to know I’m not running for Congress,” he said .[1]

On October 22, 2011, Hazel won re-election to District 61 of the Louisiana House of Representatives. He defeated Randy Wiggins (R) in the October 22 primary. Because Louisiana uses a blanket primary system, a candidate can be declared the overall winner of the seat by garnering 50 percent +1 of the vote in the primary.
