Carlson is a retired social studies teacher at Henry High School.
He is a member of the North Highway 100 Council, Northwest Young Men's Christian Association Board of Directors, PRISM Board of Directors, Legislative Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources, and the Midwest Higher Education Commission. He is married and has 3 children.[1]

Carlson won re-election in the 2012 election for Minnesota House of Representatives District 45A. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 14 and defeated Jeff Pauley (R) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
