AUGUSTA, Maine: All the statewide official petition drive deadlines have passed for 2011. However, there is just one more signature deadline this year, dealing with a potential Maine veto referendum. The petition drive deadline for the same-day registration veto referendum arrived on August 8, as reports out of the state have claimed signatures will be filed with the Maine Secretary of State.[1]

The measure would overturn a same-day election registration repeal signed by the governor on June 21, 2011. The veto effort is being led by Engage Maine, which is directed by Ben Dudley, executive director. The law that the referendum is seeking to overturn in LD 1376.

In order to make the November 2011 ballot, at least 57,277 signatures must be submitted by the August 8, 2011 deadline. However, if that deadline is missed, the same amount of signatures must be submitted by the September 27, 2011 deadline in order to be placed on the June 2012 ballot.
