Maine slot facility initiative effort only group with signatures filed as deadline looms
By Al Ortiz
AUGUSTA, Maine: The January 20, 2011 signature filing deadline line is creeping up on petition drive organizers, and according to the Maine Secretary of State, when contacted by Ballotpedia, only one of the five initiative efforts had filed signatures for their proposed ballot measure. Supporters of the slot facility proposal had turned in their petitions as of January 18, and await the certification of those signatures by the Secretary of State's office. The proposal, which would appear on the November 1, 2011 statewide ballot in Maine, would allow the establishment of a slot machine facility in the state.
In order to place the measure on the 2011 ballot a minimum of 58,054 valid signatures are required by January 20, 2011. If the required amount of signatures have been verified, the measure will go to the state legislature for review, since the measure is an indirect initiated state statute. If legislators don't vote to adopt a similar law, it will remain on the November 2011 ballot. Measure supporter Stavros Mendros stated, "We figure we'll have 7,000 to 8,000 extra. I want to get them turned in now because I'd rather have them stored someplace safe. I want them in a nice secure location where they can start processing them."
