She is a former Democratic member of the New Hampshire State Senate; she represented district 23 from 2004 to 2010, serving as Majority Leader.[2]
Biography
In the past, Hassan has been involved in representing school systems in special education matters, because she brings the unique perspective of a parent whose son went through the public school system and has severe disabilities. This was a motivating factor for her becoming involved in public service. Her involvement grew when then-Governor Jeanne Shaheen asked her to serve as an advocate on the Advisory Committee to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission. [3]
Before entering public service, Hassan was Information Officer for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services from 1980 to 1982. She then worked as an attorney for Palmer and Dodge from 1985 to 1992. She also worked as attorney/Assistant General Counsel for Brigham and Women's Hospital/Partners Healthcare from 1993 to 1996. She has been an attorney for Sullivan, Weinstein and McQuay since 1996.[2]
Education
Hassan earned her BA from Brown University in 1980. She went on to receive her JD from Northeastern University School of Law in 1985.[4][5]
Political experience
New Hampshire Governor (2013-present)
Hassan has served as Governor of New Hampshire since January 3, 2013.
New Hampshire State Senate (2004-2010)
Hassan first ran for the New Hampshire State Senate in 2002, but she was not elected. She ran for the same office in 2004 and was successful. She continued to serve in that position until 2010.[6] She is the former Assistant Democratic Whip and President Pro Tempore, and Hassan served as the State Senate Majority Leader. She represented New Hampshire's 23rd district, which includes the towns of East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Kingston, Newfields, Newmarket, Newton, Seabrook, South Hampton and Stratham in Rockingham County.
Committee assignments
While in the New Hampshire State Senate, Hassan served on the following committees:
- Capital Budget Committee, New Hampshire State Senate
- Commerce, Labor and Consumer Protection Committee, New Hampshire State Senate
- Finance Committee, New Hampshire State Senate
Legislation
NH WARN Act
Senator Hassan sponsored a bill that successfully established New Hampshire's own WARN Act (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act). [7] It requires that companies provide notification to workers in the case of massive layoffs or plant closings. This act was greatly lauded as improving worker protection in the state. [8]
NH Working
Senator Hassan was a lead sponsor on a bill that brought into being the NH Working program. [9] This program is a three-part initiative that helps businesses keep workers on the job, gets unemployed workers back to work, and provides training to aid workers in finding new jobs
Commission on Health Care Cost Containment
On February 17, 2010, Hassan introduced SB 505[10], a bill to establish a state commission on health care cost containment. The bill was signed into law in July of 2010, and by 2012 the Commission on Health Care Cost Containment will report findings on the impact of federal health care reform, options for implementing a common payment system and ways to encourage the use of incentives to improve quality and efficiency.
Elections
2014
Hassan is eligible to run for re-election as Governor of New Hampshire in 2014. She has not yet made her intentions in the race known.
2012
Hassan won election as Governor of New Hampshire in the 2012 elections.[11] The primary election was held on September 11, 2012 and the general election took place on November 6, 2012. Babiarz in the general election on November 6, 2012.[13][1]
Hassan became the second woman in state history to lead New Hampshire. If she had lost to her Republican challenger, Ovide Lamontagne, it would have been the first time in 17 years that there would not have been a Democratic female governor in the country.[14]
