He has served in the South Dakota Army National Guard since 1993. He has also worked as Press Secretary for the South Dakota Governor's office and is currently the Vice President of Administration and Corporate Communication for Sanford and MeritCare Health System.
Johnston earned his B.S. in Business Administration from Northwest Missouri State University. He and his wife Julie have two children, Jason and Kaitlin.[1]

Johnston won re-election in the 2012 election for South Dakota State Senate District 12. Johnston defeated Scott Bartlett in the Republican primary on June 5 and defeated Kent Alberty (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
