Gilstrap ran in the 2012 election for Kansas State Senate District 5. He lost to Steve Fitzgerald in the Republican primary on August 7. Incumbent Kelly Kultala ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2]
