Smith is Director of Special Projects with the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa, and has been an Adjunct Instructor of Social Work at the University of Iowa. He was on the Osceola City Council from 1981-1983, and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Social Workers.[1]
