Colvin is running for re-election to the 33rd District seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 2012. He was unopposed in the Democratic Primary on March 20, 2012, and would have been unopposed in the November 6 general election as well.[3][4] However, he chose to resign his seat in late March.[1]

Colvin won re-election to the 33rd District Seat in 2010 with no opposition. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on February 2nd. The general election took place on November 2, 2010.[5]

Controversies
Resigns to become a lobbyist
Colvin announced in late March 2012 that he was resigning his seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in order to take a position as vice president of legislative and external affairs for ComEd. When questioned about the decision, Colvin stated, “I have represented my district with honor and integrity for 11 years. I don’t know how anyone could say I’ve sold out.”[1]
As chief lobbyist for ComEd, one of Colvin's jobs in 2012 is to urge House members to vote against a bill requiring ratepayers to finance the Taylorville "clean coal" plant. However, while a member of the chamber in 2010, Colvin co-sponsored and consistently supported the bill in question.[12]
Tenaska Inc., the company seeking to build the plant, said “Mr. Colvin will help us educate lawmakers, consumers, business owners and municipal leaders about the difference between the legislation he co-sponsored in 2010 and the current bill and how it would negatively impact Illinois."[12]
