O'Kray made her career as an educator, serving in various positions in the Roseville Community Schools. Starting as an elementary school teacher, she retired in 2001 as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
O'Kray was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2001, cited for finding "practical ways to solve problems" as well as "outstanding service" to her district.[1]

O'Kray ran in the 2012 election for Michigan House of Representatives District 33. She ran unopposed in the August 7 Democratic primary and was defeated by incumbent Ken Goike (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [2]
