Biography
Shortly after graduating from law school, Jackley worked as a law clerk for then-Chief Judge Richard H. Battey in the federal district court located in Rapid City, South Dakota. He then went to practice private law at the Rapid City-based law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson, and Ashmore LLP. In addition to being a partner there, he served as an attorney specializing primarily on criminal law, civil and business litigation, construction and engineering law, Indian law, and water law. At the same time, he acted as Special Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota litigating controlled substance felony cases.
In 2006, Jackley was appointed as United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Charged with this role, he sat on the Subcommittees for Controlled Substances as well as for Native American Issues. He is additionally served on the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board.
Jackley was named Prosecutor of the Year from the South Dakota State's Attorneys Association in 2008.

Political career
South Dakota Attorney General (2009-present)
Jackley was appointed South Dakota Attorney General by Governor Mike Rounds on August 14, 2009 to fill the vacancy left by Larry Long who resigned after he was appointed to the Second Judicial Circuit Court. Jackley was sworn into office on September 4, 2009, and won election to a full term in 2010. He will next be up for election on November 4, 2014.
Issues
Gun rights
Jackley was one of two state attorneys general, the other being Wyoming, that joined Utah in filing an amicus brief expressing support for a disputed Montana law known as the "Firearms Freedom Act" that "exempts firearms made and sold in the same state from federal regulation." [1] [2] This law, along with similar legislation in other states, has been challenged by the federal government in federal district court who argues that this interpretation of the Interstate Commerce Clause is incorrect. Four other states - Alabama, Idaho, South Carolina, and West Virginia - all later followed suit. [3]
Healthcare reform
On the same morning President Barack Obama signed into law his controversial health care reform bill, the one that narrowly passed the United States House of Representatives just two days before, Jackley and twelve other Attorneys General, all but one being Republican, filed suit against "the federal government to stop the massive health care overhaul, claiming it's unconstitutional." [4]

2014
Jackley is runing for re-election as South Dakota Attorney General in 2014. While he has not yet officially announced his intention in the race, on April 19, 2013 he stated, “I’ve enjoyed this position and certainly it will be my intent to seek it again.”[5][6]
