Mary Adams is a tax-reform activist in Maine. In 2006, she was a primary sponsor of that state's Taxpayer Bill of Rights initiative.
According to her website, in 1984, Adams started a group, the "Freedom Fighters," that repealed Maine’s statewide property tax.
Adams was subsequently appointed to the Maine State Board of Education by James B. Longley, the first Governor elected in Maine as a political independent.
In 1978 she received the Rockefeller Award for Political Courage for her work in repealing the state property tax.
