Mary D. Kane is a former Secretary of State for the state of Maryland. She was one of four women, and the first Republican woman, to hold the position of Secretary of State in Maryland in 167 years.

She was sworn in as Secretary of State in August 2, 2005 after serving as Deputy Secretary of State and Chief Legal Counsel, March 2003 through August 2, 2005. She served as Secretary of State from August 2, 2005 to January 17, 2007.

Kane ran for Lieutenant Governor of Maryland in 2010.

Biography

Kane was born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 10, 1962, a daughter of Irish immigrants. She attended Mount St. Mary's University, where she received her B.S. in business and finance in 1984. She attended the Columbus School of Law and received her J.D. at the Catholic University of America in 1999. Kane was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 2001.

She was elected to the Parish Council of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, Maryland, where she sat on the board of the Mater Dei School in Bethesda, MD. She was also involved in the National Alumni Council of Mount Saint Mary’s University and the John Carroll Society. She ran for the Montgomery County Council in March, 2000 and for the House of Delegates in District 15 in November, 2002. As a graduate of Leadership Montgomery, Ms. Kane also chaired their annual session in Annapolis.

Political career

While in the Governor's Subcabinet for International Affairs, Kane was responsible for the international protocol functions carried out by the Governor's office. Under the Subcabinet, which is responsible for the collaborative efforts among all State government agencies, Kane worked to keep open communications regarding international relations subjects such as educational issues, business and environmental concerns, and cultural exchanges.

As the Secretary of State, Ms. Kane served as a member of the Governor's Executive Council. Her duties included the oversight and registration of all of Maryland's charitable organizations. These included the administration of the Maryland Charity Campaign for state employees, notaries public, special police commissions, the extradition process, the recordation of the Governor's Executive Orders, certifications, condominium and trademark registrations. She was also responsible for the Charities and Legal Services Division.

Kane faced Anthony G. Brown (D), Ken Eidel (G), Doug McNeil (L) and Michael T. Hargadon (I) in the general election on November 2, 2010. Brown won re-election.[1]
