Murphy worked as a Social Studies Teacher at Duluth Central High School from 1964-1997, and is a historical preservationist.
She is Chair of the Saint Louis County Legislative Delegation, and a member of the Minnesota Delegation of the Great Lakes Commission, and the Pension Commission.[1]

Murphy won re-election in the 2012 election for Minnesota House of Representatives District 3B. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 7 and defeated Keith MacDonald (R) in the general election on November 6.[2][3]
2010
Murphy won re-election to the District 6B Seat in 2010. He had no primary opposition. He defeated Keith MacDonald (R) in the general election on November 2, 2010.[4]
