Maryland and Virginia legislatures have decided to stop using electronic voting machines after this election. Maryland will be fully switched to paper ballots by the 2010 elections, although they will still be paying for electronic voting machines that were debt financed for $65 million until 2014. Virginia plans to phase out the electronic voting machines as they wear out. [1]

These moves are taking place due to the recent studies pointing out the susceptibility to fraud that is inherent in these machines. Kimball Brace, the president of Election Data Services stated on this news that "The battle for the hearts and minds of voters on whether electronic systems are good or bad has been lost. The academics and computer scientists who said they were unreliable have won that battle." [1]
