The Secretary is the head of the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, whose responsibility includes assisting job seekers, apprentices, union members, claimants, employers, attorneys and researchers.[1]

The current officeholder is Joanne F. Goldstein. She was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick in 2009.
Authority
The office of secretary of labor and workforce development is established by Part I, Title II, Chapter 23, Section 1 of the General Laws of Massachusetts:[2]
| There shall be an executive office of labor and workforce development, which shall be under the supervision and control of a secretary of labor and workforce development, appointed by the governor. |
Appointments
In accordance with Part I, Title II, Chapter 23, Section 1 of the General Laws of Massachusetts, the secretary is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the governor.
Vacancies
In the event of a vacancy, a successor is appointed by the governor to a term coterminous with the governor.[3]

- The division of industrial accidents
- The division of labor relations
- The division of occupational safety
Compensation
In 2010, the Massachusetts Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development was paid an estimated $125,000 according to the Council of State Governments.[5]
