Biography
Stapleton was raised, in Detroit's northwest side by her parents James Stapleton, a Detroit Police Officer, and Ella Mae Stapleton, a Detroit Schools administrator. From an early age, her parents' influence drove her to be active in the community and develop a work ethic geared toward public service.[1]
Stapleton graduated from Howard University in Washington D.C. in 1987 with a degree in Psychology. During her undergraduate years, she had her first political job working as an intern with U.S. Congressman John Conyers, D-Detroit, where she helped draft House bills and resolutions.[1]
Stapleton is a public school teacher. She also owns her own consulting business that she started in 2003.

Stapleton was defeated by Rashida Tlaib in the Democratic primary on August 7.[2][3]

Stapleton won election to the District 4 Seat in 2010. She defeated Marcelus Brice, Willie Burton, Wanda Canty, James Cole Jr., Eddie Edwards, Michael Hartt, Frazier Kimpson, Chester Logan, Gwendolyn Mingo, Mary Sheffield and Edgar Vann in the August 3 Democratic primary. She faced Lillian Smith (R) in the general election on November 2, 2010.
Political campaign history
Stapleton has previously interned for Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit). She also served on a Detroit committee, chosen in 1994 by Mayor Dennis Archer to serve with the City of Detroit’s Youth Department. Since 2003, she has worked at Wayne State University.
