Laird ran for North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2012. He lost toTracy Potter and Kirsten Baesler in the primary on June 12.[1] The general election took place on November 6, 2012.

On November 4, 2008, Wayne G. Sanstead won re-election to the office of North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction. He defeated Max L. Laird in the general election.
