Miami-Dade County Pit-Bull Ban Question (August 2012)
This measure was defeated
- YES 81,712 (36.72%)
- NO 140,838 (63.28%)
This measure asked residents if the ban on owning pit-bulls in the county should be lifted. Legislation had been proposed at the state level to rescind the county ban, but county officials reached a compromise to have it on the local ballot instead. The ban on owning pit-bulls in the county has been in place for 23 years, when an 8 year-old girl was mailed by one in the county.
Those in favor of rescinding the ordinance noted that they were opposed to the wording on the measure which includes "dangerous breed of dogs" in the ballot language but the wording was approved in February and commissioners do not seem likely to change it.
