Michael Comstock was a 2014 Democratic candidate for District 34 of the Montana State Senate.

Comstock was a 2010 Republican candidate for District 32 of the Montana State Senate.[1] Comstock switched parties from Republican to Democratic by filing to run as a Democrat in the 2012 elections.[1] He said that made the switch to "change the 'would-be communists' from within."[1]

Issues

Campaign themes

2014

Comstock's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

These are ideas that I think are important. These aren't liberal or conservative, but are issues that I feel are worthy of consideration. As an elected Senator to represent SD-34, I would vote the will of my constituency rather than my personal stance on these issues:
  • fiscal sustainability: cut or grow state govt
  • taxes: increase, reduce, OK for now
  • jobs for Montanans; how can we create more jobs ?
  • return power to the people; can we be trusted to make good choices ?
  • legislature return to annual sessions as prescribed in MT constitution
  • overhaul of MT unemployment insurance: is this a good idea ?
  • repeal business equipment tax: what do you want to do ?
  • develop MT natural resources: to what extent ?
  • personal responsibility vs nanny state
  • environmental responsibility: to what level and in what areas ?
  • individual liberty and freedom: states rights vs federal powers[2][3]

Controversies

Party affiliation

Comstock's 2012 and 2014 runs were called into question by the Gallatin County Democrats, who accused him of posturing in order to advance conservative causes. Committee member Billy McWilliams told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle that a resolution passed in 2013 to distance the county party from politically dishonest members was in response to Comstock as well as state House candidates Dane Peeples and Kathy Hollenback. Comstock told the same publication, "I think I am a Democrat. The people I've heard from in SD 34 think I'm a Democrat. And no one from the Democratic committee has ever invited me to anything, so how can they say I'm not a Democrat[?]"[8]
