Fair's political experience began with his service for Greenville County Council from 1976 to 1982. He went on to serve in the South Carolina State House from 1985 to 1995. He was a candidate for the United States House, District 4, in 1998. He joined the South Carolina State Senate in 1996. He has served in that position since, representing the 6th district.

Fair won election in the 2012 election for South Carolina State Senate District 6. Fair defeated Chris Sullivan in the June 12 Republican primary and defeated Tommie Reece (R-Petition Candidate) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2] Fair won in the general election on November 6, 2012.[3][4]
