Michael Geraghty (b. in Fairbanks, Alaska) is the former Republican Attorney General of Alaska. He was first appointed to the position by Gov. Sean Parnell on January 12, 2012, to replace former attorney general John J. Burns, who left office to spend more time with his family.[1] On April 10, 2012, Geraghty’s appointment was unanimously confirmed by both houses of the Alaska Legislature.[2] He was replaced by Craig W. Richards (R) in December 2014.[3]

Before assuming the role of Alaska's principle legal officer, Geraughty made a career as a trial attorney and partner at the law firm of Moran, Geraghty & Zobel, P.C., located in Fairbanks.[4]

As attorney general, Geraughty oversaw the Alaska Department of Law, prosecuted violations of state criminal law, issued legal advice to state officers and agencies and enforced other Alaska statutes.[5]

Biography

Geraghty, a Fairbanks native, worked as a trial attorney for DeLisio, Moran, Geraghty & Zobel, P.C. since he graduated from law school in 1978. There, he specialized in complex litigation relating to natural resources, oil and gas, and construction. He is a commissioner of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and an elected Fellow with the American Bar Foundation.[4][6]

Political career

Alaska Attorney General (2012-2014)

Geraghty was appointed to serve as attorney general by Gov. Parnell on January 12, 2012, and confirmed by the Alaska Legislature on April 10, 2012. During his confirmation hearings, Geraghty emphasized his intentions to carry on Alaska's participation in the multi-state lawsuit against Obamacare and its battle with the federal government over the endangered species designations of beluga whales and polar bears.[2]

Geraghty was first appointed to the office of Alaska Attorney General on January 12, 2012, by Gov. Sean Parnell.[4] In accordance with Title 39, Chapter 5, Section 20 of the Alaska state code, Geraghty’s appointment received unanimous approval from both houses of the Alaska Legislature on April 10, 2012.[7][8]

Personal

Geraghty was named a Best Lawyers Lawyer of the Year in 2012, and has been recognized as a "Superlawyer" by Washington Law & Politics magazine since 2008 and selected in The Best Lawyers in America in the specialties of construction law and personal injury litigation since 2007.[9]
