Herrington ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Mississippi's 4th District. On March 13, Herrington defeated his Democratic primary opponent, Jason Vitosky. As the nominee on the Democratic ticket, Herrington was scheduled to face incumbent Steven Palazzo (Republican), Ron Williams (Libertarian), and Robert W. Claunch (Reform) in the November 2012 general election.[2][3] However, he withdrew from the race in September 2012 because of illness. He was replaced by Vicki Slater on the general election ballot.[4]
