Michael Gardiner attended Cranston High School East and graduated in 1980; he then went to the University of Rhode Island where he obtained his under graduate degree in 1984. Then he attended the Western New College School of Law where he obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1989. He has practiced law in Rhode Island for twenty years, later running his own practice. Michael also was in the Rhode Island Army National Guard from 1981 until 1990.
According to Michael Gardiner's website, his campaign themes included:
- The Economy; "When consumer confidence returns, the private sector will create the right jobs to meet real demand fueling recovery, growth, and more revenues to ease our deficit."
- Energy; "We need to encourage this very affordable and practical energy conservation, an allow innovation to improve our costs and return on solar and wind."
- Gay Marriage; "Companionship and family is a fundamental right, and marriage is the device by which the state recognizes that right."
Gardiner ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Rhode Island's 2nd District. He sought the nomination on the Republican ticket. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was January 27, 2012. The primary was held on September 11, 2012.
