Young is part of the Eagle Creek and Pike Township Republican Parties. He was Vice-committeeman for the Republican Party from 1975 to 1976. He was Precinct Committeeman for the Republican Party from 1976 to 1980. From 1980 to 1982 he was a member of the Marion County Board of Zoning Appeals. He was also a Ward Chairman for the Republican Party from 1980 to 1986. In 1988 and 1993 he was a Township Chairman for the Republican Party. Young then served in the Indiana State House from 1986 to 2000. He is currently a member of the Wayne Township Republican Party.
Young worked in Management for Holiday Park Realty from 1969 to 1985. He was also Managing Partner for Phoenix Development from 1983 to 1985. From 1980 to 1999 he worked as a Political Consultant for R.M. Young. He is currently a Political Consultant.
Young earned his BA from Indiana University at Indianapolis in 1985.

Young won re-election in the 2012 election for Indiana State Senate District 35. Young defeated Daniel Kinnamon in the May 8 Republican primary and defeated Mark Waterfill (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [1][2]
