The Michelle Strong recall is aimed at Michelle Strong, the District 1 member of the Clayton County Public Schools school board in Georgia. A simultaneous effort is aimed at ousting fellow board member, Sandra Scott.
Motivating the recall effort is that Clayton Schools faces a September 1 loss of its accreditation. There are 52,000 students in district schools.
In mid-May 2008, elections officials certified the recall applications presented by the Concerned Citizens Coalition, which is behind the recall effort. In order for a recall election to be scheduled, organizers will need to collect signatures from 30% of the voters who were registered in Strong's district when she was elected. That number comes to 6,153 signatures.
Accreditation woes
A February 2008 report from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the accrediting agency for the school, blames the district's situation on a "fatally flawed" school board. The report accuses the board of:
- Bickering;
- Acting on behalf of special interests;
- Meddling in the schools;
- Making derogatory comments to school administrators during meetings'
- One school board member, the report claims, had a football coach fired for not handing over a game film featuring her son;
- Another board member spent more than $500 in school money at an Atlanta hotel.
