Primary: Michigan has an open primary system, meaning any registered voter can vote in any party's primary.
Voter registration: Voters were required to register to vote in the primary by July 9. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 9.[2]

Incumbent: Incumbent Sander Levin (D), who has represented the 12th district since 1993 will be not be seeking re-election due to redistricting and will instead be seeking election in Michigan's 9th congressional district. Democrat John D. Dingell, who has represented the district since 2003 and previously from 1955 until 1965, and previously represented the 16th district from 1965 until 2003, will seek re-election here.
This was the first election using new district maps based on 2010 Census data. Michigan's 12th congressional district is located in the southeastern region of the lower penninsula of Michigan in Detroit's inner suburbs to the north. It includes Washtersaw and Wayne counties.[3]

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Michigan's 12th District became more Democratic because of redistricting.[7]

- 2010: 63D / 37R
Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Michigan's 12th congressional district has a PVI of D+14, which is the 76th most Democratic district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by Barack Obama (D), 68-32 percent over John McCain (R). In 2004, John Kerry (D) won the district 62-38 percent over George W. Bush (R).[8]

District History
2010
On November 2, 2010, Levin won re-election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Don Volaric (R),Leonard Schwartz (L), Les Townsend (U.S. Taxpayers), Julia Williams (G), and Alan Jacquemotte (Natural Law) in the general election.[15]
