Primary: Michigan has an open primary system, meaning any registered voter can vote in any party's primary.
Voter registration: Voters were required to register to vote in the primary by July 9. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 9.[2]

Incumbent: Hansen Clarke (D), who was first elected to represent the 13th district in 2010, will seek re-election in the new 14th district. Incumbent John Conyers, Jr., who has represented the 14th district since 1993 and previously represented the 1st district from 1965 until 1993, will instead run in the 13th district.
This was the first election using new district maps based on 2010 Census data. Michigan's 14th congressional district is located in the southeastern region of the lower penninsula of Michigan encompassing the northwest side of Detroit, the suburbs located immediately west of the city, the Downriver suburbs adjacent to the Detroit River and the enclaves of Highland Park and Hamtramck. It includes Wayne and Oakland counties.[3]

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Michigan's 14th District became more Democratic because of redistricting.[9]

- 2010: 53D / 47R
Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Michigan's 14th congressional district has a PVI of D+27, which is the 25th most Democratic district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by Barack Obama (D), 82-18 percent over John McCain (R). In 2004, John Kerry (D) won the district 76-24 percent over George W. Bush (R).[10]

2010
On November 2, 2010, Conyers won election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Don Ukrainec (R), Richard J. Secula (L), and Marc J. Sosnowski (U.S. Taxpayers) in the general election.[16]
