Appointments
Three members of the public service commission are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. Commissioners serve six-year staggered terms. The Governor designates the chairman. No more than two members can be of the same political party. [2]
Duties
The duties of the Public Service Commission include:[3]
- Establishing fair and reasonable rates for regulated services and adopting and administering fair terms and conditions of service for the State's utility customers.
- Assuring adequate and reliable supplies of regulated services to all Michigan customers, and the safe and efficient production, distribution, and use of the State's energy, telecommunications, and transportation services.
- Assuring the security of the State's critical infrastructure by promoting homeland security.
- Promoting the State's economic growth and enhancing the quality of life of its communities through adoption of new technologies like broadband telecommunications and efficient renewable energy resources.
- Providing customers with the opportunity to choose alternative electric, natural gas, telecommunications, and transportation providers.
- Providing regulatory oversight in a prudent and efficient manner while implementing legislative and constitutional requirements.
