Mike Cooney (b. September 3, 1954) is a Democratic member of the Montana Senate, representing District 40.

Education

Cooney earned his BS from the University of Montana in 1979.

Professional experience

Cooney was an Officer for Cooney Food Brokerage from 1972 to 1979. From 1977 to 1988 he was on the staff of United States Senator Max Baucus. He then worked as Senator Baucus' Executive Assistant from 1979 to 1989. He was Executive Director for Montana Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies, from 2001 to 2006. He has been Division Administrator for the Montana Department of Labor since 2006.

Political experience

Cooney served in the Montana State House of Representatives from 1976 to 1980. He ran for Governor of Montana in 2000 but was not elected. He then served as Secretary of State for Montana from 1989 to 2001. He joined the Montana State Senate the following year. He has served in that position since, representing the 40th district.
