After graduating from college, Duffey worked as a reporter covering the news in the Ohio State Legislature. He then joined Hinton Ltd Public Relations, where he eventually became the Director of Media Relations. He left upon his election to office. Duffey has also been active in the local politics, re-establishing the Worthington Republican Club where he served as chairman for three years, and serving two terms on the Worthington City Council.
Duffey earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan.
