Former candidate for
Governor of Tennessee
Mike McWherter was the 2010 Democratic candidate for Governor of Tennessee. He lost the general election to Republican Bill Haslam.


Mike McWherter was the only candidate in the 2010 field who had not previously held elected office. He owned and managed a beverage distribution company in Jackson, Tennessee. Prior to that, he was an attorney in private practice in Nashville.

He received his law degree from Vanderbilt University and also graduated from Union City High School. He lives in Jackson along with his wife, Mary Jane, and their two children.

McWherter did not have any opposition in the August primary.

He faced Bill Haslam (R), Howard Switzer (G) and 13 independent candidates in the general election on November 2, 2010. Haslam won the election.[1]
