Biography
Pompeo was born in 1963 in Orange, CA. He earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1986. He went on to earn his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1994. Prior to his political career, Pompeo had served in the U.S. Army from 1986-1991, and had also worked as a business executive.[3]

Fiscal Cliff
Pompeo voted against the fiscal cliff compromise bill, which made permanent most of the Bush tax cuts originally passed in 2001 and 2003 while also raising tax rates on the highest income levels. He was one of 151 Republicans that voted against the bill. The bill was passed in the House by a 257/167 vote on January 1, 2013.[6]

Pompeo ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Kansas' 4th District. Pompeo won the nomination on the Republican ticket and won re-election in the general election.[7] The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was June 11, 2012. The date was originally set for June 1, but a delay in the redistricting process caused the state to push back the filing deadline.[8]. The primary elections were held on August 7, 2012.
