Issues
Campaign themes
2012
Sumption's campaign website listed the following issues:[1]
- Job Creation and Economic Growth
- Excerpt: "In order to ensure Illinois’ economy will remain competitive, grow, and create good paying jobs here in the 29th district, we need a sharp focus on policies that will create an economic environment that will promote business expansion and attract new companies to our region."
- Restore Fiscal Discipline
- Excerpt: "The political establishment in Illinois has failed to exercise any fiscal discipline for decades. We need to change that, and it starts with new leadership that is willing to make the tough decisions needed to get the state back on track."
- Education
- Excerpt: "Funding for our schools and providing the highest quality education for our children should be a top priority for all of Illinois. I believe that it is critical that we work to provide excellent and affordable education at all levels so our children and grandchildren will have the tools that they will need to realize their dreams and compete in a global economy."
- Health Care Reform
- Excerpt: "Although health care reform is being implemented nationally, there are plenty of opportunities for Illinois to promote both quality of life and fiscal discipline through improved health care policy and programs."
- Political Reform and Ethics
- Excerpt: "Illinois is in desperate need of political reform and higher ethical standards for all public officials. It starts by electing people with high integrity, a moral compass that clearly distinguishes between right and wrong, and the character to stand up and do the right thing despite significant pressure that can come from special interests and even members of one’s own party."
- Women’s Health and Choice
- Excerpt: "I believe a women’s reproductive health is a private issue to be decided by women, their families, and their spiritual advisors, not state bureaucrats."
