The Minnesota Commissioner of Education is an appointed state executive position in the Minnesota state government.

The Commissioner is head of the Minnesota Department of Education, whose mission statement is to "Improve educational achievement by establishing clear standards, measuring performance, assisting educators and increasing opportunities for lifelong learning."[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Brenda Cassellius. She has served in this position since being appointed by Gov. Mark Dayton on December 31, 2010.[2]

Appointments

Per 15.06 of the Minnesota Statutes, the governor appoints the Commissioner of Education with the consent of the Senate. The commissioner serves at the pleasure of the governor. His or her term expires at the end of the governor's term or if the governor vacates office.[3]
