Minnesota lawmakers file bill to block vote on same-sex marriage ban

ST. PAUL, Minnesota: The start of the 2012 legislative session is about a week away and the vote on same-sex marriage is quickly approaching. However, that may change.
In the last week (the week of January 9, 2012) to introduce bills for consideration during the 2012 legislative session, lawmakers introduced a bill regarding the November 2012 vote on same-sex marriage.
The proposed legislatively-referred constitutional amendment asks voters:[1]
Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?
The recently filed bill, however, would remove the proposed constitutional amendment from the ballot and block it from a public vote.[2]
The constitutional amendment was referred to the ballot on May 21, 2011 following approval by a majority of the members of each chamber of the Minnesota State Legislature
The 2012 bill's chief author is Rep. Karen Clark. According to reports, in the Minnesota State Senate the bill is to be represented by Sen. Scott Dibble.[2]
The 2012 legislative session convenes on January 24, 2012.
