Jackson, Mississippi: Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant is leading the charge to qualify a proposed constitutional amendment for the November 2011 ballot that would declare that "Life Begins At The Moment Of Fertilization".[1]

If successful, the effort will result in adding language to the Mississippi Constitution that declares that life begins at "the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof."[1]

The official ballot title for Initiative 26 is "Should the term 'person' be defined to include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the equivalent thereof?"

To qualify for the ballot, its supporters must garner about 90,000 valid signatures by February 10, 2010. Qualifying for the Mississipp ballot is notoriously difficult.
