Mississippi Initiative 26 just the start of political fight across the country
JACKSON, Mississippi: There's a national political fight brewing, and it's all starting in Mississippi. On October 12, 2011, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards sent out a fundraising letter to abortion supporters across the country to bring the spotlight on the happenings surrounding Initiative 26, the "personhood" measure, in Mississippi. The measure would add language to the Mississippi Constitution that declares that life begins at "the moment of fertilization."
Richards stated that “this ballot initiative is about more than just one state. Anti-choice activists hope that a win in Mississippi will lead to a national movement.” Richards also pleads in his letter to “help to stop this dangerous ballot initiative.”
Keith Mason, the President of Personhood USA, one of the main supporters of the personhood movement, countered his opponents' actions by stating: “They’re starting to show signs of desperation. Personhood is a growing and thriving movement. Planned Parenthood knows exactly what the consequences will be—Roe v. Wade defeated and a shrinking bank account.”
