A Mississippi Voter Identification Petition is being sponsored by Delbert Hosemann and Sen. Joey Fillingane for the 2011 statewide ballot after the Mississippi Senate failed to take action on the proposal.

The measure, if successful, would require Voter ID at the polls in the state. Hosemann says, "I've been pushing voter I.D. I think people see it as a common sense thing to do and I really think that this initiative is something that will pick up steam in the summer and that we'll be voting on it a year from now."[1]

Signatures

At least 90,000 signatures, spread equally from Mississippi's four congressional districts are needed in order for the petition drive to be certified.[1] The deadline for the 2010 ballot was October 1, 2009, however, supporters missed the deadline.[2] Instead, supporters are aiming for the 2011 ballot. The signature petition deadline is February 14, 2010.[3]

In late July 2009 Voter ID activists announced that they had collected approximately 25,000 signatures.[2] On September 11, 2009 according to Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Brad White 35,000 signatures have already been verified.[4] As of November 2009, proponents have collected about 55,000 signatures.[3]
