The Missouri Director of Agriculture is a state executive position in the Missouri state government.

The director serves as head of the Department of Agriculture, which was established in 1933. The Department sets agriculture policy, assists farmers, and regulates the industry.

The mission statement of the department is "To serve, promote, and protect the agricultural producers, processors, and consumers of Missouri’s food, fuel, and fiber products."[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Jon Hagler. He was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon in 2009.

Authority

The state Constitution addresses the office of director of agriculture in Article IV, the Executive Department.

Under Article IV, Section 35:

The department of agriculture shall be in charge of a director appointed by the governor by and with the advice and consent of the senate...

Appointments

Per Article IV, section 35 of the Missouri Constitution, the director of agriculture is appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate.

Duties

The Missouri Department of Agriculture sets agriculture policy and provides assistance to farmers throughout the state. Its duties include consumer protection, public health roles, environmental advocacy, agricultural marketing, public information and awareness, and promoting new technology and new uses for Missouri’s agricultural goods.[2]

Compensation

Article IV, Section 21 of the state Constitution addresses compensation of executive officials:

Under Article IV, Section 21:

The officers named in this article shall receive for their services salaries fixed by law, which shall not be increased or diminished during their terms.

In 2010, the Missouri Director of Agriculture was paid an estimated $120,000 according to the Council of State Governments.[3]
