Missouri Medicaid Reinstated (2008)

The Medicaid Reinstated initiative, also known as the Statutory Amendment to Chapter 208 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, Pertaining to Reinstating Healthcare, 2008-018, did not appear on the November 4, 2008 statewide ballot in Missouri as an initiated state statute. The measure would have reestablished the level of service and eligibility criteria that was in effect on January 10, 2005 for Medicaid.

It would have also provided health care to residents earning minimum wage, to those whose incomes don't exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level, and to disabled Missourians employed in sheltered workshops.

According to estimates provided by the State Auditor's office, the restored benefits would cost the state about $255 million a year.

Status

This initiative failed to submit enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

Support

Robin Acree, a community activist from Mexico, MO, led the petition drive.

"This would take Missouri HealthNet and make it a quality, affordable and comprehensive program for more Missourians," Acree said.

Opposition

Governor - Matt Blunt proposed the original cut backs and would have likely opposed reinstating the increase.
