Background
A similar measure was submitted by Trego for the 2012 ballot called Constitutional Initiative 110. The measure was virtually the same as the current measure and was filed with the Montana Secretary of State on October 14, 2011. This followed a similar submission made on July 11, 2011, that was rejected as being "not legally sufficient."[2][3]

Attempt in 2012
To gain ballot access for the November 2012 ballot, supporters needed to collect 48,673 valid signatures from registered voters. In addition, those signatures needed to be submitted by the June 22, 2012, petition drive deadline.
Supporters did submit signed petitions on the June 22 deadline, however, the total was insufficient to have qualified for the ballot.
Attempt in 2014
To gain ballot access for the November 2014 ballot, supporters need to collect valid signatures from ten percent of the total number of votes cast for governor in the last gubernatorial general election, including ten percent of the voters in each of forty legislative house districts. In addition, those signatures need to be submitted by the June 20, 2014 petition drive deadline.
