ALBANY, New York: The candidate filing deadline for candidates intending to run in this year's state legislative elections was July 12. In New York, candidates file with either the New York State Board of Elections, New York City Board of Elections, or their county board of elections.

As of July 26, the New York State Board of Elections had not released even an unofficial list of candidates. In an effort to build election pages for the state Senate and state Assembly, members of the Ballotpedia staff have contacted individual county boards of election to ask for their lists. In two cases (Nassau and Suffolk) they were instructed to submit a Freedom of Information Law request, which they did. Suffolk has since provided their candidate list but Nassau has yet to respond.[1]

In the 42 other states that are holding legislative elections this year, comprehensive candidate lists have been available for weeks.
