NC Senate unanimously passes Susie's Law

RALEIGH, North Carolina: The North Carolina Senate unanimously passed "Susie's Law," which makes cruelty to animals class F felony. Under the law, an offender could be sentenced to a maximum of 8 months in jail. The bill began after a man burned, beat, and left for dead his 8 week old puppy. He was sentenced to probation, the toughest sentence allowable under law.[1]
The dog, known as Susie, had her ears burned off, but survived and was adopted. Sen. Donald Vaughan expressed his support for the bill, stating, "Susie in her little life has created an awareness that those that torture animals ought to receive jail time. I believe there's an important lesson in this law — that North Carolina is serious about animal abuse and anyone who tortures an animal can go to jail." The bill now goes to Gov. Beverly Perdue who is expected to sign it.[2]
